LAKE ORION — Strong pitching is one of the most tried-and-true ways to win a championship, and a trio of Rochester Adams pitchers backed up the Highlanders Oakland Activities Association Red Division championship with sterling outings on Monday to claim their third district championship in four years.
Adams senior Weylin Frisbie and junior Bo Lineberger combined to shutout Clarkston in the final, out dueling Wolves senior Jake Velisek to grab a 1-0 win.
Frisbie started for the Highlanders and went five innings, giving up two hits and three walks while striking out four. Lineberger came in and earned the 6-out save, giving up two singles and getting help from a pair of double plays behind him, including centerfielder Matt Mcclennen doubling off a pinch runner second to end the game.
Junior Joey Prechtel opened the day with a complete-game 3-hitter as Adams dropped Oxford 5-1 in the semifinal. Prechtel allowed an unearned run, a walk and struck out six Wildcats while working around five errors behind him.
“That’s as mentally tough as I’ve seen (Prechtel) on the mound in the three years he’s been on varsity,” Adams head coach Jeff Hall said. I give all the credit to him. He didn’t let it bother him. He just went out there and fired fastballs.”
The Highlanders started the day well offensively, scoring five runs in the first two innings of the semifinal against Oxford, but could muster just one run over the next 11 frames. Jordan Wiley went 2-for-2, scored two runs and had an RBI and two walks in the first game. Justin Seablom went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Prechtel followed up his stellar pitching performance in the semifinal with the biggest hit of the day, a fourth-inning single that drove in Wiley.
“(Velisek) was getting ahead a lot, so he was throwing a lot of first-pitch strikes,” Prechtel said. “I realized if I sat back and waited for my pitch I could drive it. He was really tough today. He mixed speeds and kept hitter off balance.”
Velisek gave up four hits in the loss and outside of the fourth inning didn’t allow a runner beyond first base.
“Take your hat off to Velisek,” Clarkston head coach Phil Price said. “He did a heck of a job.
Clarkston senior D.J. Zezula had two hits and was on base three times in three at bats.
Adams (29-11) advances to a regional semifinal where the Highlanders will face the winner of Troy vs Troy Athens on Saturday at Rochester.
“This is what we wanted to do all year,” Hall said. “We knew we had a deep team, it was just a matter of if we could put it together. We have down the stretch. We expect to be in the regional. Now we have our work cut out for us there.”

2015 OAA RED LEAGUE CHAMPS!
ROCHESTER HILLS – After losing the resumption of Monday’s game against Lake Orion on Wednesday, Rochester Adams knew it needed to win the next two scheduled games against the Dragons in order to claim a share of the Oakland Activities Association Red Division title.
But don’t give Adams head coach Jeff Hall credit for giving a Knute Rockne speech just before the start of the second game.
“Lambo actually talked to them and I don’t even know what he said,” said Hall, referring to assistant coach Andy Lamkin.
Whatever was said might not have solely spurred Adams on from there, but it certainly couldn’t have hurt, as Adams responded to win the next two games on its home field to earn a share of the league title and a dogpile celebration near the mound afterwards.
The teams started the first of a three-game series for the league title on Monday at Lake Orion, which was scoreless after four innings before being suspended due to rain.
Lake Orion entered the week a game ahead of the Highlanders for first place.
In an attempt to get that resumed game and the regularly scheduled doubleheader in on Wednesday, the teams bumped the start time up a couple of hours to 2 p.m. and managed to get in all the games with plenty of daylight left.
Lake Orion won the resumed game, 3-0, before Adams mercied the Dragons in the second game by a score of 10-0 in five innings.
Then Adams got it done in the last game, winning 4-2 to win a share of its first league title since 2010.
“We have been working hard towards it and haven’t had one of these since 2010,” Hall said. “It was one of our goals to win it this year and it shows how tough our league is and what a grind it is to get through it.”
Now the teams will have a full two weeks of non-league games before they meet again in the game that really counts, a first-round state tournament game on May 26 at Lake Orion.
“We go at it again and we know everything about each other,” Hall said. “It’s going to be a dogfight.”
Lake Orion clinched its half of the league title right away on Wednesday, breaking open a scoreless game by scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning.
Senior Joe Turnbull had an RBI single and junior Mike Falter allowed just one hit in three innings of relief for Lake Orion.
The second game was all Adams, which jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and earned the mercy by scoring three runs in the fifth, taking advantage of five Lake Orion errors.
Senior Jordan Wiley had a 2-run single to lead Adams, which only had six hits but drew six walks.
Adams junior Bo Lineberger was outstanding on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in five innings of work.
In the third game, Adams scored single runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead before Lake Orion answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut its deficit to 3-2.
After Adams responded by scoring a run in the fifth, Lake Orion put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the seventh before Adams senior starter Weylin Frisbie capped off a complete game by inducing a game-ending flyout to set off an enthusiastic Adams celebration.
JD Seablom went 3-for-3 with a run, Wiley went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Tyler Durand and Jackson Hohauser each added an RBI to lead Adams (20-10, 10-5).
Dillon Gibbons and Miles Hardy each had two hits to lead Lake Orion (15-10, 10-5).
“You have to give Adams some credit because they put us in situations where we didn’t execute defensively and they executed offensively,” Lake Orion head coach Andy Schramek said. “We were constantly going uphill and couldn’t get anything going. The symptom of our team is that we are getting guys on base, but we are taking out want ads for someone who wants to drive in runs.”
